Old Antique Cello Labelled Benjemin Banks 1832 Salisbury With Hard Case. 1/2 sized. Sold as seen.
A man from Amati came today to pick up another cello (not listed), and looked at this one for me. He said it is French and agrees with what I have written about it’s state of repair below. He estimated it would fetch £750-£1000 at auction (excluding case), so I have adjusted the price accordingly. I will consider any sensible offer, or will take to them to auction if not sold here.
This cello is playable - it had been used by a higher grade young cellist until grown out of. Set up with Dominant strings. The case is a modern hard shell case with wheels. There is one foot missing, but this could be easily replaced. Good condition otherwise. Case cost around £180 new.
Most cracks in the front are old repaired ones, quite possibly one or two are open, I am not an expert though.
One lower rib in needs repair, but doesn’t affect the playability, it’s just a little fragile.
Various things could be done to improve this cello, it sounds really good as it is, but it could be so much better with perhaps a new bridge or suchlike. A beautiful cello for someone to learn/improve on.
Has graffiti from 1841 on the scroll. Has a stamp of 1832 on the button, but this is thought to be a reference number or similar, and has label inside as shown.
Can be collected in person, or sent via courier with the bridge taken down for safety.
